As I get older it gets harder and harder to hit the ground running. Muscles get tight, shoulders come to ears, and so on. Here is a quick 10 minute, easy, feel good yoga practice that can be done right as your roll out of bed.
Step 1: Get out of bed:
Plant both feet flat on the ground. Take notice of this ground energy. Imagine if it is a warm golden light entering from the souls of your feet, up to your ankles, to your knees, to your hips. Allow this energy to swirl around your belly, up through your chest, to your shoulders, down your arms, to your finger tips, back up to your neck and then out the top of your head. (adapted from a meditation by Liliana Barzola Read) Imagine that this light starts to gently fall all around you, like fairy dust. Sit for a moment, breathe and enjoy it.
Placing equal weight on both feet and using your hands on your knees, press up from your bed to standing.
Here, with an inhale, draw your hands out to the sides and up above your head. With an exhale, bring hands to heart. Repeat this 3 times.
On the 3rd exhale, pour forward in a gentle morning forward fold. Dont pull, just pour forward as much as you feel the need to do. Inhale back up to standing, hands over head. Exhale pour forward into a fold. Repeat this 3 times.
On the 3rd exhale. Bend knees, allow hands to come to the floor. Gently make your way into a cat/cow position. Shoulders over wrist. Hips over knees. Do 3 full cat/cows. Inhale, look forward, tail bone to the ceiling. Exhale, look to your belly button as tail bone heads down to the floor.
Sit back on your heals and take in the morning. Now hit the ground running.
Whats your morning routine? What stops you from taking 10 minutes for yourself in the morning? Do you feel like as a feather? or stuck like a stone? I would love to hear your comments below.
